MOTION DESIGN
BIO•GEO•SOM
2023
BIO•GEO•SOM is the graduation research project I developed at the School of Design of the State University of Minas Gerais. It departs from the ambient music genre — described by Brian Eno as music designed to "induce calm and a space to think" — and asks how visual design can amplify that experience, drawing the listener's attention deeper into the sound.
The title encodes the project's three conceptual pillars. Bio represents life — the viewer as a living being who enters and activates the work through their presence. Geo invokes the earth and the notion of landscape, borrowing from the idea that ambient music functions as a kind of geographic art, stimulating the listener to inhabit an imagined place. Sonoro anchors everything in sound. Together, the three words propose a synesthetic territory where image and music meet.
The animations were produced in TouchDesigner, a software I learned specifically for this project. The process began with months of close observation of natural movement — water, wind, fire, plants, animals — recorded and sketched as a way of translating felt experience into visual form. Each piece is a subjective interpretation rather than a literal transcription: an attempt to illustrate the feeling provoked by ambient music, drawing from organic textures and the visual language of the genre's album artwork.

From the bank of twelve animations produced, several applications were explored. The first is a virtual platform where the spectator navigates through different rooms, each containing a piece of ambient music alongside the animation that best captures its feeling. The platform is conceived as an open infrastructure — a space that could be offered to producers and labels for virtual events, album launches, or curatorial projects.
The live application was always where the project was pointing. Using Resolume alongside TouchDesigner, the animations can be mixed in real time — reacting to music, layered, and shaped into a VJ set. In December 2023, the project was selected in an open call from Function, a Brazilian web radio centred around electronic music, where a DJ performs a live set alongside a live visual performance. Below is the flyer for the first episode, made in collaboration with designer and friend Emir Lucresia.
This project would not be possible without the online community that facilitates TouchDesigner software learning. Special thanks to Elekktronaut, PPPANIK and Supermarket Sallad.
